boogie man

happy Halloween!

in the east, they celebrate their dead a little differently. no costume parties, trick 'n treatin or pumpkin carving/smashing. instead they have their ghost month, a time of year when those of Chinese decent honor their dead with huge feast offerings (which can often be seen sitting on tables outside of homes and businesses) and a fear of swimming in water. though Halloween's not much celebrated here, it is a growing phenomenon as the western world seems to have more influence as time goes by. some elementary schools will encourage kids to dress up in school and parade around campus, and the big cities filled with foreigners usually have halloween parties hosted by night clubs and bars. but otherwise, if youre caught roaming around ol' countryside taiwan in a costume on October 31st, the only treats youre sure to get are strange glances and police officers stopping you requesting to see your passport. no syringe flavored snickers or opium laced reeses. lame. luckily my school offers more than english vocab and cool american teachers. my boss likes to introduce american culture to our students as well. so, every year Doors English school transforms into a haunted house on october 31st and marches its youngest through dark classrooms infested with ghosts and ghouls and creepy crawlers hidden throughout. with the help of a few of our older students and a new teacher in the hood, we managed to scare about 5 or 6 kids into crying and a few more into fighting for their lives. hilarious. through all the tears and screams the kids seemed to enjoy it and went home with candy filled pumpkin buckets.

i wanted to be a ninja turtle, but the costume was weak. so i settled for this sub-par mummy. its a lot harder the wrap yourself in gauze than movies lead you to believe. before you ask...the basketball shorts were used to prevent exposer of the bulge (and i like to be prepared in-case a game breaks out on the spot)

Nathan. hes rockin the Chinese zombie. the yellow paper is a spell that leads the soul to its final resting place...or just a piece of garbage that stuck to his make-up. you decide.

little vincenzo even got in on the terror, he was crawling on the floor in the dark grabbing feet. awesome.
